Where to look

A short list of good places to find remote work, development and NGO jobs, scholarships, grants and internships. We chose them by hand and wrote the notes ourselves.

No real job asks you to pay. On any of these sites, if someone asks for a fee, a deposit or a visa payment to apply, it is a scam. Leave and report it.

Remote job boards

For work you can do from anywhere. Check the time zone and the country a company will hire in before you apply.

NGO and development jobs

For aid, humanitarian, UN and non-profit work. Official UN sites never charge a fee at any stage of recruitment.

    Gathers openings from the UN system and other international organisations in one searchable place. Free to browse.

    The United Nations Secretariat’s own careers site: official vacancies that you apply for directly. Free.

  • UNDP Careers (opens in a new tab)undp.org

    The UN Development Programme’s own openings page, with jobs and internships in offices around the world. Free.

  • CharityJob (opens in a new tab)charityjob.co.uk

    The main jobs site for the charity sector in the United Kingdom. Free for job seekers.

Scholarships and fellowships

For study and research abroad. Deadlines are fixed and the eligibility rules are strict, so start early and read them twice.

    The German Academic Exchange Service: scholarships and funded study or research in Germany, with a searchable database. Free to search.

    The UK government’s international scholarship programme for one-year master’s degrees. Read the eligibility rules carefully before you apply.

    A search engine for PhD positions and funded doctoral projects worldwide. Free to use.

  • Mastersportal (opens in a new tab)mastersportal.com

    Compare master’s programmes in many countries and find scholarships listed alongside them. Free to browse.

  • ProFellow (opens in a new tab)profellow.com

    A database of fellowships and funded programmes for graduates and professionals, with advice on applying. Much of it is free; some extras are paid.

Grants and funding

For organisations and projects looking for money. Read who is eligible first: most funders only accept certain countries or kinds of group.

Internships and first jobs

For students and new graduates building a first record of work.
